Continuing Health Care
Continuing healthcare aims to provide comprehensive, fully-funded care for those with the most complex and intense health needs, ensuring they receive appropriate support without financial burden.

What is Continuing Health Care?
Continuing healthcare (CHC), also known as NHS continuing healthcare, is a package of care for adults with complex, ongoing healthcare needs that is arranged and funded solely by the National Health Service (NHS) in England.
Here are the key points about Continuing Healthcare

Eligibility
It’s for adults (18 or over) who have significant, complex, and ongoing healthcare needs due to disability, accident, or illness.

Primary health need
To qualify, a person must be assessed as having a “primary health need”, meaning their main care requirements are for healthcare rather than social care.

Funding
If eligible, the NHS covers the full cost of care and residential accommodation, regardless of the person’s financial situation.

Assessment process
Eligibility is determined through a two-step assessment process:
- Initial Checklist screening
- Full assessment using the Decision Support Tool

Care settings
CHC can be provided in various settings, including a person’s own home, care home, or hospice.

Not diagnosis-specific
Eligibility is based on care needs, not on having a particular diagnosis or condition.

Regular reviews
Once awarded, a person’s eligibility for CHC is reviewed regularly, usually annually.

Appeals process
If someone is found ineligible, there is an appeals process to challenge the decision.
